There are various causes of neck pain in general population. One of the primary reason for neck pain is poor posture where the patients tend to lean forward significantly so that the head is quite anterior to the rest of the body which fatigues the muscles and the patients commonly report pain not only in the neck but also in parascapular muscles at the base of the neck. This pain typically gets worse as the day passes and feels better in the morning after one takes a warm shower. Treatment primarily consists of good posture and strengthening the appropriate muscles and the patient feels better.
Common cause of disc and facet irritation is arthritis of the facet joints or injuries to the neck resulting in disruption or herniation of the disc/s which causes acute to chronic neck pain.
This can be treated with medications, rest, exercises, injections and in some cases cervical surgery all of which are successful in a significant percentage of the patients. Mid Back Pain: Mid back pain generally affects the area overlying the spinal column and the nearby areas adjacent to the thoracic spine. The pain can be caused by arthritis of the facet joints of the thoracic spine or rarely due to disc degeneration. Another source of pain is poor posture with slouching as a major contributor. The intercostal nerves can also be a source of pain along with the muscles and ligaments. The condition is generally treated with physical therapy and rehabilitation and if conservative treatment does not help in that case x-ray guided injections can make a significant difference in the patient’s life.
